Many drama artist/educators are confronted with wonderful, yet opposing challenges. They have many students, yet few plays for young people have enough roles for participants.
They are creative artists with passion, yet may feel unsatisfied by the material suitable for young actors. They have supportive parents and school community, who may feel fatigued by the usual school play fare. This workshop is meant to provide artist/educators with tools to develop, rehearse, and perform a socially relevant piece (fun and funny as well) that is voiced by students—suitable for audiences comprised of both peers and adults.
“Lysistrata’s Children” may be performed as written, however it is structured in such a way that the director can improvise and create with students new scenes that may be substituted for original scenes. Students and director can make the play their own without diminishing the impact of the story. This workshop will examine the process of the creation of “Lysistrata’s Children” from auditions to performance. This is a process that may be adapted to create new work on a variety of themes.
